Three individuals have been charged following a Royal Canadian Mounted Police operation targeting drug trafficking in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Yellowknife RCMP said on Aug. 11. The investigation included seizures of controlled substances, cash, and a firearm after violent incidents linked to the drug trade.

Yellowknife RCMP confirmed one man from Alberta was arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled substance, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of property obtained by crime. The operation led to the seizure of approximately 50 grams of crack cocaine, 10 grams of marijuana, steroids, a loaded pistol, and about $20,000 in cash during searches of apartment units in the city.

According to a news release from Yellowknife RCMP, the arrests followed violent drug-related incidents including a stabbing and a home invasion, both associated with drug trafficking activities. The force stated 15 people were arrested in connection with the operation; however, only three have been formally charged.

"This investigation demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the Yellowknife RCMP to combat drug trafficking and related violence in our community," the RCMP said on their official website (rcmp.ca). "We continue to seek the public's assistance in identifying those involved in drug trafficking to keep Yellowknife safe."

Local news outlet CBC News reported on Aug. 11 that some suspects detained during the raids were subsequently released without charges. The seized drugs also included unidentified pills.

The case comes amid concerns about drug trafficking in northern and remote communities across Canada, including Indigenous communities.

The man arrested in Yellowknife is from Alberta, according to Yellowknife RCMP.

Funding for policing and addiction services in northern communities has been a subject of ongoing debate.

As of Aug. 12, the investigation remains active with no further charges announced. The RCMP encourages anyone with information related to drug trafficking in Yellowknife to come forward through official channels.
